Star Alliance – airline members
Star Alliance is the largest worldwide alliance with its 26 members. Here you find out which airlines are part of the alliance and what benefits you can receive as a frequent flyer.
There are three major airline alliances in the world – Star Alliance, SkyTeam and Oneworld. Star Alliance is the largest one and was founded back in 1997 by the airlines Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Thai Airways and United Airlines. Since then, the five founding members have been joined by 21 more airlines.
Among the members of Star Alliance there are both some of the world’s largest carriers and some smaller and more regional airlines. The cooperating airlines offer more than 50 global hubs and their headquarters are found in Frankfurt, Germany.
Benefits with the alliance
There are a bunch of benefits with worldwide alliances, both for the partnering airlines and for you as a flyer. First of all, choosing an airline that is part of an alliance normally makes connections better if you are flying with connecting flights. The airlines also usually share services, which means you can address an issue with one airline to either one in the partnership.
If you are a frequent flyer with Star Alliance, there are a lot of pro’s. This means you can earn and spend miles across all members of the alliance. You can also have access to for example priority check-in, priority baggage handling and priority boarding. In some cases you are also allowed to carry extra luggage – and if that is not enough you have access to over 1000 lounges worldwide.
